* USES: 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride is used in the manufacture of organic peroxide initiators. It is an active intermediate may also used in manufacturing agricultural chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
* HEALTH HAZARDS: - 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride is corrosive to the skin and eyes and may cause blindness upon contact. - The ability of this material to pass through the skin and its potential to cause systemic toxicity is unknown. - Inhalation of vapor or mists may lead to burning sensations in the mouth and nose, coughing, and shortness of breath. Pulmonary edema may develop following inhalation exposures and may lead to death. - The effects of long-term, low level exposures have not been determined. Avoid repetitive, acute exposures. - Ingestion of 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride can cause severe burning pain to the mouth and throat. - LC50 Inhalation (rats) : 1.26mg/L - LD50 Dermal (rabbits): >2010mg/L - LD50 Ingestion(rats): 1410mg/kg
* HANDLING AND STORAGE: Store 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride in a cool, dry well-ventilated area to reduce the potential accumulation of toxic vapors. Keep 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride away from water, all heat and ignition sources to prevent fire or explosure.
Wear a NIOSH/ MSHA- approved, full face piece, self-contained or supplied air breathing apparatus to avoid exposure to toxic vapors. Wear goggles and gloves when handling 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride.
Transfer 2-ethylhexanoyl chloride from container to storage tank or reactor using Teflon plastic-lined or glass-lined piping,valves and pumps. Lined metal handling systems should be electrically grounded . All piping systems must be clear and dry.
