For nearly 500 years, from 1420 to 1911, the Imperial Palace, known to the world as the Forbidden City, was the home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The largest and most complete existing samples of imperial palace architecture, the Forbidden City became the Palace Museum in 1925.
