The London stock market closed at its lowest level for more than two and a half years on Friday.

The benchmark FTSE 100 index closed at 5,412.80, down 63.8 points, or 1.16 percent, at its lowest close since November 2005.

The market is now down by almost 20 percent from its peak a year ago.
