  • China Telecom Takes over CDMA Business
  • Source:CMO  Date:October-06-2008  Editor:Xinhua
  • China Telecommunications Corporation (Telecom Group), the country's biggest fixed-line phone company, formally takes over the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network on Wednesday.

According to China News Service, the Telecom Group will invest heavily in upgrading its newly acquired network. But since the company already spent 110 billion yuan to buy the business, it is facing moderate financial strains.

However, the company said it will overcome the difficulties and provide users with better services to compete with its rivals.

The transfer is expected to be finished in three months.

The Telecom Group says broadening wireless CDMA network coverage will be its top priority in the next quarter.

The first phase of work includes building a batch of new CDMA urban base stations, improving coverage in counties and townships, and beefing up indoor coverage by FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) services.

Telecom Group also plans to increase mobile wireless Internet speed over the next three years.

The fixed-line company, which is losing users to China Mobile Ltd., is determined to enter the faster-growing wireless market as the government attempts to foster greater competition.

The deal is part of the government's planned reorganization of the 105 billion US dollar telecommunications industry announced on May 24, allowing fixed-line carriers to expand into wireless services and creating three operators offering phone and Internet connections to the nation's 1.3 billion people.

China's CDMA service has already attracted 42 million users as of this August. China Unicom earned a pretax profit of 1.2 billion yuan from its CDMA business last year, compared with 1.06 billion yuan in 2006.

The country's telecom reshuffling forms three major market players, China Mobile, China Netcom (merger with China Unicom), and China Telecom, to compete for dominance in fixed and wireless services.
